What are the key facts?

  • Highest documented price for one LP: US$790,000 — The Beatles (White Album), copy number 0000001, sold in 2015; the buyer was Jack White
  • Highest price for an album of any kind: US$4 million — Wu-Tang Clan, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, bought by the collector group PleasrDAO in September 2021
  • Most expensive Beatles sleeve variant: About US$125,000 — a sealed first-state stereo "butcher cover" of Yesterday and Today, 2016
  • Most expensive UK single: £24,320 — Sex Pistols, "God Save the Queen" on A&M, Wessex Auction Rooms, 5 July 2024
  • Cheapest start on this list: The Velvet Underground acetate cost 75 cents at a New York flea market in 2002 and sold for US$25,200 on eBay in December 2006
  • What none of them are: None is an ordinary retail copy of a famous album
  • Condition basis for every price guide: Guides quote Near Mint; Goldmine says a Very Good copy usually brings no more than 25 per cent of that

The documented sales, highest first

The most expensive mass-produced vinyl record ever sold is Ringo Starr's own copy of The Beatles, the album everyone calls the White Album, stamped with serial number 0000001. It made US$790,000 in 2015. The buyer turned out to be Jack White, and the record now sits in the vault at Third Man Records in Nashville.

Here is what the best-documented sales actually made, with the year attached:

  • The Beatles, White Album, copy 0000001 — US$790,000, 2015
  • Wu-Tang Clan, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin — US$2 million to Martin Shkreli in 2015, seized by a federal court in 2018, sold by the US Department of Justice for US$2,238,482.30 on 27 July 2021, and resold to PleasrDAO for US$4 million that September
  • Elvis Presley, "My Happiness", the 1953 acetate he paid to cut himself — US$300,000 at auction in January 2015, also bought by Jack White
  • The Beatles, Yesterday and Today, sealed first-state stereo butcher cover — about US$125,000 in 2016
  • Frank Wilson, "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" — £25,742 in April 2009
  • The Velvet Underground & Nico, Scepter Studios acetate — US$25,200 on eBay on 16 December 2006
  • Sex Pistols, "God Save the Queen" on A&M — £24,320 at Wessex Auction Rooms on 5 July 2024
  • The Beatles, White Album, copy 0000005 — £19,201 on eBay in 2008

Number 0000005 matters more than it looks. The first four numbered copies went to the band, so 0000005 was the first one a member of the public could buy — and it still made nearly twenty thousand pounds.

What actually creates a five-figure record

Three situations account for almost every expensive record, and none of them is age.

  • It was withdrawn. A&M pressed the Sex Pistols single and destroyed the stock when the label dropped the band; Record Collector has called the survivor the most collectable record of all time.
  • The artwork was recalled. Capitol pasted a new picture over the Beatles' butcher sleeve. A sealed, never-pasted first state is the version that reaches six figures; a third state, where somebody has peeled the paste-over off, is the most common and the least valuable of the three.
  • It is a pre-release disc. Acetates, test pressings and promo-only demos exist in single or double figures by definition. The Velvet Underground and Frank Wilson discs are both this category.

Age on its own does almost nothing. A 1965 hit single pressed in the millions is worth less than a 1965 flop pressed a few hundred times.

Condition sets the number under the headline

Every price guide you will read quotes Near Mint, and Goldmine — the American standard the rest of the trade copied — is blunt about how rare that is: it estimates that no more than 2 to 4 per cent of all records left from the 1950s and 1960s are truly Near Mint.

Below Near Mint the drop is steep and well documented. Goldmine puts Very Good at no more than 25 per cent of the Near Mint price. Good and Good Plus fetch 10 to 15 per cent. Poor and Fair bring 0 to 5 per cent, if they sell at all.

So a record listed in a guide at $400 is a $100 record at VG and a $50 record at Good. That single fact explains most of the gap between what people expect and what they are offered.

Checking a record of your own

Work in this order and you will not waste an afternoon.

  • Identify the pressing first, not the album. Copy the catalogue number from the label and the full string etched in the runout groove, character for character, both sides.
  • Grade it honestly under a strong bare bulb held at an angle. Our vinyl grading scale page sets out every Goldmine grade and what each one is worth.
  • Look up sold prices, not asking prices. The vinyl record price guide page explains which databases show completed sales and which only show hopeful listings.
  • Only then decide whether an appraisal is worth paying for.

If you are not sure what you are holding, photograph the label and the sleeve and the app identifies it. The identification is the useful part; the price follows from the pressing and the grade.

FAQ

What is the most valuable vinyl record?

For a record you could in principle buy a copy of, it is Ringo Starr's White Album number 0000001, which sold for US$790,000 in 2015. For albums of any kind, Wu-Tang Clan's Once Upon a Time in Shaolin is higher: one copy exists, and PleasrDAO paid US$4 million for it in September 2021 after the US Department of Justice sold it earlier that year.

Is there a reliable top 100 most valuable vinyl records list?

There are many such lists and most repeat figures with no source and no year, which makes them useless for valuing your own records. Treat any price without an auction house, a seller and a date as a rumour. The sales on this page all carry a year, and several carry the exact auction or the exact eBay closing date.

Are my old records worth anything?

Most are worth a few dollars each, because the records people kept are the ones that sold in the millions. The exceptions are early pressings of titles collectors chase, withdrawn or recalled editions, and anything in genuinely Near Mint condition — which Goldmine estimates applies to only 2 to 4 per cent of surviving 1950s and 1960s records. Sort by pressing and condition before you sort by artist.
