What a Thriller LP is worth
A played copy of Thriller is one of the most common LPs on earth, and it is priced accordingly. The album was released on 29 November 1982, it spent a record 37 weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, it was the best-selling album in the United States in both 1983 and 1984 — the first album ever to manage two years running — and it has sold around 70 million copies worldwide. As of August 2021 it is certified 34 times platinum in the US.
Those numbers are the answer to the question. Roughly 34 million certified American shipments means the record exists in nearly every used-vinyl bin in the country.
What that leaves is a condition question and a pressing question. A Near Mint original 1982 US pressing with a clean gatefold and an unmarked label is a different object from a worn copy with ring wear and a name on the label, and the published multipliers say how different: Very Good Plus is generally about 50 per cent of the Near Mint price, Very Good no more than 25 per cent, Good and Good Plus 10 to 15 per cent.
Grading a record everyone played
Thriller was bought to be played, which is why so few copies grade well. Goldmine is direct about this: most people have an inflated sense of the condition of their discs, and its grades are not on a sliding scale.
There is a specific warning that applies to this record. Goldmine's experience is that LPs made from the early 1970s until about 1989 tend to play worse than they look. Thriller sits squarely inside that window. A copy that looks clean under a lamp can still have audible groove wear from a decade of parties and cheap cartridges, so if you can play-grade it, do.
The standard faults to look for are spindle marks around the centre hole, a dulled surface that has lost its factory gloss, light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail — which caps the record at Very Good — and ring wear on the sleeve. Grade the disc and the sleeve separately; Goldmine suggests averaging the two values for a mixed-grade copy.
A cut-out marking on the sleeve — drill hole, clipped corner, saw cut through the spine — permanently prevents a Near Mint cover grade. Copies of huge sellers were later dumped as deleted stock, so this is worth checking.
Which pressing do you have
With a record this widely manufactured, the edition question is the only one that can move the price.
Start with the country. Epic released it in the United States and CBS handled it internationally, and the two markets are priced by different sources. Goldmine's American price guides list only LPs manufactured in the United States, or made abroad specifically for US release, and explicitly exclude imports — anything marked BIEM, GEMA or MAPL, anything saying Made in Canada, Made in the UK or Made in Germany.
Then read the runout. The matrix number is stamped or etched into the dead wax, different on each side, and its suffix is the cut number: 12345-3 is the third lacquer cut of that side. Sides were recut when stampers wore out, and a record pressed at plants in more than one city may have a master cut at each plant. For a title that shipped tens of millions of copies, there are many such cuts, and they are not all the same pressing.
The sleeve is a gatefold, and the inner picture is part of the original package. A copy missing the inner sleeve or with a split gatefold hinge grades and prices below an intact one.
For comparison: what a six-figure record looks like
It is worth knowing what actually reaches the top of the market, because it explains why a 34-times-platinum album does not.
Ringo Starr's individually numbered copy of the White Album made US$790,000 in 2015 — unique because of a serial number. A sealed first-state stereo Beatles butcher cover made about US$125,000 in 2016 — scarce because Capitol recalled the artwork. Elvis Presley's 1953 acetate of "My Happiness", which he paid to cut himself before he had a contract, sold for US$300,000 in January 2015. Wu-Tang Clan's Once Upon a Time in Shaolin was pressed as a single copy and sold to PleasrDAO for US$4 million in September 2021.
Every one of those is unique, recalled or pre-release. Thriller is none of those things. It is the most successful commercial record ever made, and commercial success is the opposite of scarcity.
How to price a copy properly
Do it in this order.
- Establish the country of manufacture from the label and the back cover.
- Transcribe the runout string on both sides, keeping hyphens and spacing, and note whether each part is hand-etched or machine-stamped.
- Check the gatefold is intact and the inner sleeve is present.
- Grade the disc and the sleeve separately under one strong light held at a low angle, and play-grade if you can, given the era warning above.
- Search completed sales for that exact pressing and grade, not for the album title. Asking prices prove nothing.

What Thriller LPs actually sold for
An ordinary played US copy of Thriller sold for $50 to $150 in September 2026. Popsike returns about 25,000 results for the album (checked 2026-09-25). These are completed eBay auctions:
- 1982 LP, gatefold, Epic: $50, 21 September 2026
- 1982 US first press with original inner sleeve, VG++: $150, 22 September 2026
- Factory sealed 1983 US copy with hype stickers: $175, 20 September 2026
- Japanese pressing with obi and booklet (3P-399): $75, 22 September 2026; another Japanese copy with obi, $56, 21 September 2026
- A copy graded 8, described as a first Carrollton pressing: $2,400, 26 May 2026
- Sealed original US first pressings: $3,000 on 3 June 2021 and 15 October 2021, $2,000 on 16 October 2022
Some guides online quote four-figure prices for ordinary unsealed first pressings. The completed sales we found in 2025 and 2026 do not support that. The money is in sealed copies and in a high certified grade.
The highest Thriller results in the archive are signed copies: a signed original gatefold at $15,000 on 11 May 2026 and a signed promo with a JSA certificate at $150,000 on 26 August 2022. That price is for the autograph, and authenticating a signature is a different job from identifying the record.
The Thriller misprint: the missing co-producer credit
The Thriller "misprint" sellers list is a back-cover error on early 1982 US copies (Epic QE 38112). The producer credit names Quincy Jones alone and leaves out "Co-Produced by Michael Jackson"; sellers describe the credit as added on later printings (seller's description, Popsike listing sold 7 September 2026). Jackson is credited as co-producer of the album (Wikipedia).
It is common. Popsike returns 175 results for Thriller QE 38112 error copies and 234 for Thriller misprint (checked 2026-09-25). Recent completed sales:
- $34 to $150 for most copies between July and September 2026
- $200 on 7 September 2026, a copy graded Mint for the disc and Good for the cover
- $450 on 16 August 2026
- $625 on 22 July 2026, a promo first press, the highest we found in that window
Treat the misprint as a small premium on a clean copy, not as a rare variant. The error is on the jacket, so a misprint cover with a worn or later disc inside is priced on the disc's grade.
Which Michael Jackson records are worth money
Sorted by price, Popsike's Michael Jackson LP results (checked 2026-09-25) fall into four groups, and none of them is an ordinary shop copy of a hit album.
- Signed copies. A signed Bad LP sold with a ticket from the 19 June 1988 Berlin concert made €28,950 (about $33,654) on 31 July 2021. A signed and authenticated Bad made $3,000 on 7 March 2026.
- The "Smile" 12-inch, listed by sellers as an unreleased single: $1,983 on 4 July 2019, €1,520 (about $1,767) on 17 June 2024.
- Coloured-vinyl foreign pressings of Thriller. A Nigerian blue-vinyl promo made €1,750 (about $2,034) on 23 September 2017, another Nigerian blue copy £1,200 (about $1,590) on 13 December 2018, and a Peruvian yellow-vinyl copy $1,875 on 10 April 2015.
- Sealed copies. A sealed first-edition HIStory LP made A$5,000 (about $3,313) on 2 November 2021, and a sealed Bad with hype sticker graded AMG 9 made $1,000 on 9 May 2026.
If your copy is none of these, it is priced like the ordinary Thriller results above, on grade and completeness.
FAQ
How much is a Michael Jackson Thriller vinyl worth?
Ordinary played copies are worth little, because the album has sold about 70 million copies worldwide and is certified 34 times platinum in the US. Price turns on grade and pressing: a Near Mint original with an intact gatefold is worth roughly four times a Very Good copy of the same pressing, since VG is capped at 25 per cent of Near Mint.
Is an original 1982 Thriller pressing worth more?
Usually yes, but not by much on its own, because tens of millions of copies were made in the first years. Establish the country of manufacture and transcribe the runout on both sides — the cut suffix, such as -1 or -3, identifies which lacquer cut you have, and a different cut is a physically different pressing.
Does a sealed copy of Thriller sell for more?
Sealed copies can beat the guide price, but Goldmine lists four reasons to be careful before paying a premium: the shrink wrap may have been replaced, the record inside may not be Near Mint, it may not be the original pressing, and very occasionally the wrong record is inside. Buy sealed copies from sellers who accept returns.
What is the misprint on the Thriller album?
On early 1982 US copies (Epic QE 38112), the back cover credits Quincy Jones as producer and leaves out "Co-Produced by Michael Jackson", according to sellers' descriptions. It is common: Popsike shows 175 such copies, most selling for $34 to $150 between July and September 2026, with a promo first press reaching $625 in that window.
How much does an original Michael Jackson Thriller album cost?
A played 1982 US copy sold for $50 to $150 on eBay in September 2026 (Popsike). Sealed original first pressings made $2,000 to $3,000 in 2021 and 2022, and a copy graded 8 made $2,400 in May 2026.
Which Michael Jackson albums are worth money?
Signed copies, sealed first editions, the "Smile" 12-inch, and coloured-vinyl foreign pressings of Thriller from Nigeria and Peru, which have each sold for $1,500 to $2,000 or more (Popsike). Ordinary copies of Thriller, Bad and Off the Wall are common.
How do I know if my album is worth money?
Check for anything that makes the copy scarce: sealed shrink wrap, a promo label, coloured vinyl, a signature, or a withdrawn sleeve. Then grade it and compare with completed sales of the same pressing. Our how to tell if a record is valuable page walks through the checks.
